Got Leftovers? All Sorted!

How can we amplify unheard voices and reach wider audiences by fostering empathy?

This project tackles food misallocation and waste through a playful, interactive design: a food tray liner that folds into a takeaway box and, when flattened, doubles as a Monopoly-style board game featuring solutions to reduce food waste.

Product Design, 2022

Duration: 3 months

Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Procreate, Brackets

Primary Research

Dumpster Diving

Went dumpster diving around campus to gain a deeper, firsthand understanding of food waste and the behaviors that contribute to it.

  • 1/3 of the foods are still in good shape or even untouched

  • Many leftovers are foods from the university canteen

  • Discovered that higher living standards often correlate with more wasteful lifestyles

Instagram Survey & Result Analysis

Conducted an online questionnaire exploring attitudes toward leftover food, food-sharing platforms, and the consumption of items nearing expiration.

  • Food-sharing platform remains a relatively new and debated concept due to concerns around food safety, hygiene, and liability

  • Food waste problem is often underestimated, with many unaware of its broader environmental and social consequences.

Goal:

  1. Reduce food waste

  2. Introduce food sharing platforms

  3. Promote takeaway habit

How?

  1. Provoke empathy

  2. Function driven

  3. Gamification

Target Audience:

University students

as they are often financially constrained yet more open to trying new things, making them more likely to adopt food-sharing platforms.

Prototyping

Redesign User Journey

Problem: lack of takeaway options = food goes to waste

Solution: A tray liner that folds into a box makes packing leftovers effortless

Result: Help students build waste-reducing habits naturally

  • Developed an interactive tray liner that folds into a takeaway box and transforms into a Monopoly-style game board promoting food waste awareness, with each square highlighting a sustainable solution.

  • Designed and coded an online companion tool featuring a digital dice, chance cards, community chest cards, and a money calculator to enhance gameplay experience

Final Outcome

Introducing a new solution to food waste that combines functionality, social impact, and—most importantly—fun!

Each block introduces a different solution to food waste, featuring platforms such as Too Good To Go, the ShareTheMeal program, and OLIO, alongside creative ideas for transforming leftover food into new dishes.
