Home Sweet Home
Edible Furnitures, 2020-2025
Work in progress
Tools: sugar, water, flour, egg, spices
If food can satisfy hunger, can it also feed our emotions — carrying memory, place, and identity in every bite?
This project was created while confined to my university accommodation in London during COVID, when homesickness led me to recreate my bedroom in Taiwan inside a shoebox.
I later revisited it as a pastry chef, when traveling home remained difficult. This time, I used edible elements and flavors from home to explore how food can evoke emotion and create immersive and personal experiences.
My Bedroom in a Shoebox
Studied the layout and scale of my bedroom through photos sent by my family, then resized each element to fit inside the shoebox
To recreate the room as realistically as possible, I used mixed media — fabric, thread, cardboard, acetate, wire …etc. Movable mechanisms, such as sliding door and liftable piano cover, were added to enhance realism and interactivity
Redesigning an Edible Version
Redesigned each element for execution in edible media, experimented with different recipe for furniture structures based on texture, strength, appearance, and flavor
Production
I used sweet paste biscuits as the main furniture structure and sponge cake sheets as cushions for the sofa and bed, infusing them with Taiwanese flavors such as five-spice powder, sesame oil, and soy sauce to evoke memories of home through both the making and tasting experience
