POLY APP

UI/UX Design, 2022

Undergraduate Final Year Project

Duration: 5 months

Tools: Figma, Procreate, Adobe Illustrator

How can graphic design improve human well-being by making healthcare delivery more efficient, understanding, and empathetic?

Poly App extends the vision of Poly Health, carrying forward its core values of empathy and accessibility in digital healthcare design. The app expands the user experience beyond education by integrating features such as diet and progress tracking, personalized guidance from dietitian, and a reward-based system that motivates sustainable lifestyle improvement for individuals with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome).

Individual In-depth Interview (IDI)

This project targets young women diagnosed with PCOS who are smartphone users and often struggle to maintain a healthy diet due to challenges with self-discipline and long-term motivation.

To better understand user needs and behaviors, I conducted an interview with a participant who has personally experienced difficulty managing her weight after being diagnosed with PCOS. Her insights helped shape the project’s focus on creating a system that supports consistency, encouragement, and a sense of progress through empathetic design.

Q1: What is your biggest motivation to lose weight?

A: I gained almost 10kg after being diagnosed with PCOS so I couldn't fit in to most of my clothes anymore. However, the main factor that driven me to lose weight was how other people see me. Some people don't understand and think I'm just finding excuses.

Q3: What do you think makes your weight loss journey fail?

A: Because progress is slow and my efforts don’t seem to show in my weight, I often feel discouraged and end up emotional eating. It’s also difficult to keep track of things I eat during the day, so I tend to snack on fruits and other foods without realizing how much I’ve consumed.

Q5: Who do you usually talk to when you feel discouraged from your PCOS conditions?

A: When I feel depressed, I usually talk to my friends. They always try to cheer me up, and I’m really grateful for that. But sometimes I still feel a lack of true understanding or belonging because I’m the one actually going through it. I also feel guilty for sharing my negative emotions so often.

Q2: What kind of dietary change have you tried to lose weight?

A: I have slight insulin resistance and high cholesterol level so I tried to follow a low carb diet along with 30 minutes of exercise each day. It seems like my metabolism has gone down and it is very hard for me to lose weight compared to the past.

Q4: Does gaining weight affects your self-confidence and body image?

A: I used to enjoy buying new clothes and dressing up on special occasions but now I feel meaningless to do so because I don't seem to look good in any clothes. Also, people around me even my family would put pressure on me but they don't understand how difficult it is to lose weight.

Q6: Have you ever seek professional mental health support before? Why or why not?

A: I’ve thought about speaking with a psychologist, but I’m afraid to share my deepest thoughts with a stranger, especially in person. The idea of seeking mental health support also scares me—it makes me feel like a patient, which is something I don’t want to identify as.
